Buy a New Laptop Computer – Some Advantages and Disadvantages of Owing One

By Charles L Harmon

Everyone seems to have a new laptop computer today.  If you do not have a laptop computer and are considering buying one, here are some advantages and disadvantages of buying a new laptop computer.

Advantages:

The first major advantage is the portability.  This means that the laptop can be used in many places besides home and office.  They can be used during the commute to work, on long flights, in coffee houses, lecture halls, and libraries.  The portability advantage offers several advantages.

  • Productivity–You can be productive at times that would be wasted with a laptop computer but not a desktop.
  • Immediacy–Having a laptop with you at all times allows you instant access to various information, work, and personal files.  It also helps with collaboration between boss and employee, and student and teacher.  The laptop can be opened anytime to present a problem or solution anywhere, anytime.
  • Up-to-date information– If a person has more than one desktop PC, problems of synchronization may arise.  If you have a new laptop computer in at home or work and you carry one with you, you will not have that problem because the files are stored in a single location and always up-to-date.
  • Connectivity–With so many places having Wi-Fi service, you can access the internet and local connectivity while being mobile.

Some of the other advantages of owning a new laptop computer are the size.  They are smaller than a desktop PC and this is good if you share a dorm room or small apartment.  When you are done with it, it can be folded up and put away.  They are also more energy efficient and quieter than desktop PC’s.  They also have a battery and can be used during a power outage.  The last advantage is that the new laptop computer is all-in-one, which means they have everything integrated into the chassis.

Disadvantages:

Some of the disadvantages are;

  • Performance – often not as good as a desktop computer
  • Upgradeability – this is sometimes not possible or limited compared to desktops
  • ergonomics and health – usually smaller keyboards and screens plus no mouse
  • durability – because of portability and compactness, durability suffers
  • security – it’s much easier for a laptop to be stolen
  • privacy – using Wi-Fi or wireless in unsecure places, people can overlook you entering usernames and passwords if you’re not careful

Laptop computers and desktop PC’s are comparable in performance but the laptop computers are still higher price.  Upgrading a laptop is very limited but hard drives and memories can upgraded easily.  The motherboard, CPU, and graphics are not always intended to be upgraded.

Prolong use of a laptop can cause repetitive strain injury due to the small and flat keyboard and track pad pointing device.  Neck or spine injuries can happen because you have to hunch over to see the screen.  The durability of the new laptop computer is put to the test because they are subjected to more wear and physical damage.  The laptop computer is a prize target for theft, and if it is stolen, you can suffer identity theft, credit card fraud, and invasion of privacy.

There are many advantages and disadvantages when deciding to purchase a new laptop computer.  When you read everything, there seems to be more advantages to owning one.  If you are a student, or businessperson, the laptop computer could be a good buy for you.
