Windows Dominates Netbook Market

In the early days of the Netbook it was interesting to note that a retail computer was being sold in high street shops with Linux installed. It must have scared Microsoft as well apparently since they extended the XP operating system to Netbooks.

It claimed on their blog that the XP operating system is the dominant OS as far as Netbooks go but many believe this only applies to the US and stores that are counted.

Vista seems to be less common as it’s demanding power uses too much battery and some people are not taking Microsoft at their word. Linux seems to have better online sales but XP still remains the dominant OS. You are more likely to find that people in Europe that purchase Linux systems. In the meantime Microsoft is also gearing up to release Windows 7 on Netbooks. Whether this is the right thing to do, who knows.

But will Linux outnumber Windows sales by 2012?

An ABI Research principal analyst Philip Solis says, “ABI Research believes that 2012 will see the tipping-point at which netbooks running Linux-based and mobile operating systems outnumber those running Windows XP. Device vendors, chip-makers and mobile operators can take some comfort from the fact that this trend should help expand the market even in a down economy.

So what are your thoughts? Do you honestly think that Linux will outsell Windows by 2012?

Let me know your thoughts!
